Our Beliefs and Leadership Structure

Our beliefs

Christ the King stands with the historic Christian faith that has been confessed by the church for centuries.

We believe the Bible is the Word of God and the final authority for what we believe and how we live. At the center of Scripture is the good news that God has reconciled the world to himself through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Our church belongs to the Reformed tradition of Christianity. This tradition emphasizes the grace of God in salvation, the authority of Scripture, and the calling of believers to live faithful lives in every sphere of life.

Our beliefs are summarized in the historic confessions of the church and we most closely align ourselves with the Westminster Standards (west-MIN-ster), which include:

  • The Westminster Confession of Faith
  • The Westminster Larger Catechism
  • The Westminster Shorter Catechism

These documents help articulate the teachings of Scripture and guide the life and ministry of our church.

Our denomination

Christ the King is a congregation of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA).

The PCA is a denomination founded on being faithful to the Scriptures, true to the Reformed faith, and obedient to the Great Commission. Churches within the PCA seek to combine theological conviction with thoughtful engagement in the communities where God has placed them.

Our Leadership structure

Christ the King is governed according to the Presbyterian form of church leadership.

The word presbyterian comes from the biblical word for elder. In Presbyterian churches, leadership is shared among a group of elders who, together with the deacons, care for the spiritual and practical life of the congregation.

Elders
Our church led by elders who are responsible for spiritual oversight, teaching, and pastoral care. Together, these elders form what is called the Session, the governing body of the local church.

Deacons
Alongside the elders, deacons serve the church through ministries of care, mercy, and practical service. Deacons help ensure that the needs of the congregation and the wider community are met with compassion and wisdom.

Connection to the Wider Church
Presbyterian churches are also connected to one another through regional and national bodies.

  • Presbytery - a regional gathering of churches that provides accountability, support, and shared mission. CTK belongs to the South Texas Presbytery.
  • General Assembly - the broader assembly of the denomination where churches cooperate in mission and ministry.

This structure allows local churches to remain rooted in their communities while also belonging to a wider family of churches.

our church order

The life and governance of churches in the PCA are guided by a document called The Book of Church (BCO for short), which outlines the responsibilities of church leadership, the process for church membership, and the principles that guide church life.
